About Christchurch
New Zealand's South Island is a land of extremes – dramatic mountains, crystal-clear lakes, ancient glaciers, and charming towns all come together to offer travellers a uniquely diverse experience. Starting in the revitalised garden city of Christchurch, this itinerary winds through turquoise lakes like Tekapo, the majestic peaks of Aoraki/Mount Cook, the laid-back vibe of Wanaka, the adventure hub of Queenstown, the mystical sounds of Fiordland, icy glacier walks at Fox Glacier, and ends with marine marvels in Kaikōura. Every location brings with it a perfect blend of scenic beauty, adventure, comfort, and culture – all wrapped up with outstanding vegetarian-friendly cuisine and luxurious stays.
My Experience
We began our journey in Christchurch, where punting on the Avon and strolling through botanic gardens was the perfect slow start. A short detour to Akaroa for dolphin watching added a magical marine touch. Lake Tekapo was a stargazer’s paradise – the skies at Mount John Observatory left us in awe. At Aoraki/Mount Cook, hiking Hooker Valley surrounded by glaciers and snow-capped peaks was surreal. Wanaka was a pleasant change of pace – quaint, artsy, with breathtaking views from Roy’s Peak. Queenstown pumped adrenaline through us with jet boating and paragliding, yet balanced it with peaceful evenings and gourmet vegetarian meals. Te Anau’s glowworm caves and the ethereal Milford Sound cruise felt like entering another world. We ended with the mighty Fox Glacier, walking on ice under a helicopter's roar, and finally relaxed in Kaikōura watching whales and seals. This itinerary offered us an enchanting mix of luxury, adventure, and soul-refreshing natural beauty.
